How to Log Out of Facebook Messenger on iPhone or iPad

Trying to log out of Messenger on your iPhone or iPad? You can’t sign out of your Messanger app directly because there is no option given for that within the app. But there is another way to do that and this article tells the process in easy steps on how to log out of Messenger on both iPhone and iPad.

    Quick Steps

    • Open the Facebook app on your iPhone.
    • Tap the menu icon (the three horizontal lines) in the top-right corner.
    • Scroll down and tap Settings & privacy > Settings > See more in Accounts Center.
    • Choose Password and security > Where you’re logged in.
    • Find your device and tap Log Out.

Why There’s No “Log Out” Button on Messenger

Unlike most apps, Meta doesn’t provide a direct sign-out button. Facebook keeps you logged in to make sure you can receive messages instantly. While this sounds convenient, it’s a headache if you want to do it without removing your account or maybe you want to log in with another account.

Even if you can’t do that directly from the menu, there’s still a way that involves both the Facebook app and tweaking some settings & privacy options.

Here’s a step-by-step process for logging out of Messenger using your iPhone or iPad through Facebook.

    • Open the Facebook app on your iPhone/iPad.
    • Tap the menu icon (the three horizontal lines) at the bottom-right corner.

Settings option under Settings & privacy section.

    • Scroll down and select Settings & privacy, then tap on Settings.

Login accounts list in Facebook app on iPhone

    • You will see the list of all accounts you have logged in with Facebook. Choose the one you want to sign out of Messanger.

    • In this screen, there will be a list of all the logged-in devices where your Facebook account is active. From the bottom, tap Select devices to log out.

Pop up menu to log out devices from Facebook and Messanger app.s.

    • Select the device or multiple devices from where you are signing out of your Messanger app and hit the Log out button.

You can also repeat the same steps mentioned above within the Messanger app.

    Uninstall Messenger App: Another Way

Another way to sign out is by removing the app itself. I know it sounds extreme, but it’s pretty simple and harmless. Don’t worry—your messages and conversations are saved in the cloud, so they won’t be lost.

    1. On your iPhone/iPad home screen, find the Messenger app.
    2. Press and hold the icon until the options menu appears.
    3. Tap on Remove App and then confirm to uninstall.

After you’ve uninstalled Messenger, you won’t receive any notifications or messages. To use Messenger again, you’ll need to reinstall Messenger from the App Store, and it’ll prompt you to sign back in.

    • Next, the process is the same as what you have done in the Facebook app. Simply choose the account, select the device to sign out, and tap Log out.

What Happens to Saved Conversations When You Sign Out?

You might be wondering, “What happens to my messages if I log out or uninstall the Facebook Messenger?” Don’t worry, your messages and conversations are all backed up on Facebook’s servers, so saved conversations will be restored when you log back in or reinstall Messenger.

That said, if you uninstall the app and don’t log back in, you won’t lose any conversations, but you won’t get notifications about new messages either.
