Twitter or X, whatever you prefer calling it, is bleeding users, and the migration to Bluesky is on trend. If you are tired of the noise, the bots, and the continuous breaking features, shifting to an alternative isn’t a bad idea. Bluesky, a decentralized platform built by Twitter’s co-founder Jack Dorsey, started as a X’s spin-off, with a similar layout, mechanics, and overall UI to the classic bird app.

The only trouble is starting from scratch. You don’t want to lose your meticulously curated timeline, mutuals, or years of posts. Thankfully, switching takes maybe 30 minutes, and you can transfer most of your followers along. Bluesky runs on chronological feeds, zero ads, and algorithmic control. The platform had 25 million users in early 2025, and migration tools have become legitimately good. Here’s how to move your Twitter account, rebuild the network, port block list, and import old tweets to Bluesky.

How to Set Up Your Bluesky Account

First, you need to set your new base. You no longer need an invite code to join Bluesky. Simply install the Bluesky app from the iOS App Store or Google Play, or visit bsky.app on desktop.

    • Create your account using an email address.
    • Pick your handle. By default, it will format as @yourname.bsky.social. Choose a handle easy to remember and recognize so your old Twitter mutuals can find you.
    • Set up the profile before you follow anyone. Upload the same avatar and banner image you used on Twitter. Copy and paste your old bio. Ensure your Bluesky profile matches your X account exactly so people are more likely to follow you when they see your notification.

How to Migrate Your Follows and Blocks

Sky Follower Bridge takes care of this migration automatically. Basically, this browser extension checks your Twitter following list against the Bluesky database to find your peeps.

    1. Download the Sky Follower Bridge extension on Chrome, Edge, or Firefox.
    2. Generate an “App Password” on Bluesky. Go to Bluesky Settings > App Passwords > Create App Password. Name it something like “Bridge” and copy the generated code. Never use your main account password for third-party extensions.
    3. Open Twitter on a PC browser and head to your Following page (x.com/following). Press Alt+B on Windows or Option+B on Mac to open Sky Follower Bridge.
    4. Enter your Bluesky username and the app password you just created.
    5. The extension will scan your Twitter follows and cross-reference them with Bluesky accounts. This process will take time, depending on how many people you follow, sometimes 10 minutes, sometimes an hour for accounts with thousands of followers.

Results will populate and show everyone who done the switch. Click Follow All to add everyone at once, or manually select preferred accounts. The tool will show matching confidence levels to verify questionable matches. You can do the same with your followers to see who else from your audience moved over. The extension works the same way either way.

Tip: You can execute this exact same process on your Followers page (x.com/followers) and Blocked list (x.com/settings/blocked/all). Block list migration is a big timesaver to keep the new feed clean. Run this tool every couple of weeks, as a lot of new users migrate every day.

How to Import Your Tweets to Bluesky

It’s usually the hardest part to leave your old posts behind when switching, but thankfully, some third-party developers have introduced ways to import your Twitter data to Bluesky.

    1. Request Twitter Archive: Go to your Twitter Settings > Your Account > Download an archive of your data. Twitter takes anywhere from 24 to 48 hours to compile this and email you the download link.
    2. Extract the ZIP file: Once downloaded, unzip the folder on your computer. You will require the assets folder and the main archive file.
    3. Use an import tool: There are a few good options to move these posts to your new profile. BlueArk is a dedicated web app that lets you upload your archive file and pushes your old tweets—complete with their original timestamps and media—to your Bluesky profile. Alternatively, the Porto Chrome Extension lets you select the unzipped archive folder, filter out replies or specific dates, and import the timeline from the browser.
    4. Generate another App Password for the import tool, authenticate your account, and let the script run. If you have thousands of posts, leave the browser open and let it work in the background because it will take time to migrate large amounts of data.

Twitter is usually very strict about using such third-party tools and often block them, so use it when it works.

Before you completely nuke your old account or delete the app from your phone, drop a final post to let your stragglers know where you went. Post your new @username.bsky.social handle, pin that post to the top of your profile, and swap your website link in your Twitter bio to your new Bluesky URL.
