If you’ve been watching shows or movies on Amazon’s Freevee app these past years, you’ll unfortunately need to say goodbye soon. The company just informed users about the shutdown of the free streaming service in August 2025. But don’t worry, you won’t lose your favorites as the company is moving everything from Freevee to Prime Video, and you’ll still be able to watch lots of content for free.

    It’s Game Over for Freevee

Amazon began sending messages to Freevee users this week to let them know about the closure. Currently, the app is working fine, and you can watch video content as much as you want until the end of August, but after that, it’s game over for Freevee.

The streaming service first launched back in 2019 with the name “IMDb TV.” Amazon changed the name to Freevee in 2022, giving it a unique identity from IMDB (a well-known movie database site owned by Amazon).

Freevee was favored by people being a completely free platform, just at the cost of consuming some ads during your shows to watch stuff for free. Many popular shows like “Jury Duty” (which even got nominated for an Emmy!) and “Bosch: Legacy” have been available on Freevee.

Amazon Wants to Make Things Simple and Straight

Amazon wants to simplify things for everyone. Instead of having two different streaming apps for watching, they’re going to bring together everything in one place.

“Prime Video is the new exclusive home for Freevee TV shows, movies and Live TV,” Amazon explained to users. This decision makes sense for Amazon because they already have Prime Video, their main streaming service. By combining everything, they don’t have to manage two separate platforms anymore, which is going to reduce hustle and of course, money.

Thankfully, you won’t lose access to free content. When Freevee shuts down, you can still watch many shows and movies on Prime Video without paying for a subscription.

Amazon promises that “a large offering of free streaming content will still be accessible for non-Prime members.” This includes some of their original shows, movies, and live TV channels. You’ll only need to download the Prime Video app and sign in with your Amazon account to keep watching. Look for the “Watch for Free” section to find content you don’t need to pay for.

This change comes at an interesting time for streaming. A recent Nielsen report found that streaming services are now more popular than cable and regular TV in the United States. Free streaming services like Freevee, along with Pluto TV and Tubi, have been a big part of this growth.

Amazon first hinted at this shutdown back in November 2024, so they had been planning this move for a while. The company’s focus is now more on Prime Video, especially after it began putting ads on the service in January 2024.
