The Radeon RX 7900 GRE lasted only about a year on the market and had limited availability. If the rumor is true, you may not be able to find one in the coming weeks.
AMD’s RX 7900 GRE Is Now Out-of-Stock At Every Major Retailer, Hinting Towards A Potential End of Life
The RDNA 3-based AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE is reportedly going to disappear from the market permanently. The news comes from Tweakers who have observed that the GPU has poor availability in the EU region and only one model is available on the market.
It’s from ASUS, but when asked about it, the company said that the quantity is limited and it may not receive more GPUs from AMD. Apparently, this is what we see in the NA region and other parts of the world. A quick check on some of the biggest online retail stores, including Amazon, Newegg, Walmart, and Best Buy, I couldn’t find a single new Radeon RX 7900 GRE GPU for its MSRP.
The GPU is primarily absent in these stores, but even if you find one available, it will cost close to $1000 or may come in an open box. This indicates that GPUs may soon disappear entirely from the market. This is already happening despite AMD not commenting on the issue, and it will be difficult to secure one right now.
AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE (Golden Rabbit Edition) was initially launched for the Chinese market in 2023 but was launched in various parts of the world at the beginning of 2024. It filled the gap between the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7900 XT, using the die from the latter GPU. However, it was the cutout Navi 31 die, and the GPU also had a narrower bus width of 256 bits compared to 320 bits on the RX 7900 XT.
Performance-wise, the RX 7900 GRE was closer to the Radeon RX 7800 XT than the RX 7900 XT and gave good competition to the RX 4070 at launch. The GPU brought a good 16 GB GDDR6 VRAM, 5120 Shaders, and was rated at 260W.
AMD is preparing to launch its RDNA 4-based Radeon RX 8000 series GPUs, which are expected to arrive at CES 2025 with GPUs based on Navi 44 and Navi 48 dies. While other Radeon RX 7000 GPUs will also have an end to their lifespan, the RX 7900 GRE is apparently the first one to disappear from the market, even before all the RX 6000 GPUs are discontinued. However, AMD will still cover it under the warranty and will continue to offer driver support.
