AMD won’t follow the 8000 naming convention but will go straight to RX 9000 for its RDNA 4 discrete GPUs, as revealed by a leak and a retail website.
AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT and 9070 appear on a retail website, confirming the “RX 9000” naming convention
We today reported about the AMD “RX 9070 XT” GPU, which is supposedly the flagship model in the upcoming RDNA 4 lineup, and it looks like the naming convention is true. AMD is indeed going with the RX 9000 naming convention instead of opting for the RX 8000. This was confirmed by a retail listing as well as from a leaker, who posted a list of GPU names based on the RDNA 4 architecture.
Apart from the RDNA 4 lineup, the leaker also revealed the naming schemes of the Strix Halo iGPUs and more Radeon RX 7000 GPUs. As for the RDNA 4 lineup, at least two GPUs have been confirmed from the retail listing on Grossbill Pro. These are the Radeon RX 9070 XT and Radeon RX 9070. These SKUs will utilize the Navi 48 GPU die and are expected to compete with the GeForce RTX 4080.
Apart from these two GPUs, the leaker “All The Watts!!” says there will be the Radeon RX 9060, RX 9050, and 9040 series. This means, despite having only two GPU dies, Navi 44 and Navi 48, there are supposedly several discrete GPUs planned for the launch. Plus, there will be dedicated GPUs for the mobile platforms as well, including the Radeon RX 9070M XT, 9070M, and 9070S.
The RX 9000 naming convention is possibly adopted due to the Strix Halo iGPUs, which come with the RX 8000 naming convention. The graphics on Strix Halo APUs will include the RX 8060S, RX 8050S, and RX 8040S. We have already seen the RX 8060S in several leaks, and it will be available on flagship APUs such as Ryzen AI Max+ Pro 395 and Ryzen AI Max+ 395 chips.
The Strix Halo iGPUs will be based on the RDNA 3.5 architecture and will feature up to 40 Compute Units. Now, AMD is also supposedly continuing the already existing RDNA lineup by launching a few more SKUs for both desktops and laptops. These are:
- Radeon RX 7750 series
- Radeon RX 7650 series
- Radeon RX 7750S
- Radeon RX 7650 GRE
- Radeon RX 7650M XT
- Radeon RX 7650M
- Radeon RX 7650S
More information is expected to be unveiled in the coming days before the official launch. The RX 9000 is scheduled to launch at CES 2025, when NVIDIA is reportedly releasing its GeForce RTX 50 “Blackwell” series SKUs as well.
