Google continues to infuse the Gemini Live AI assistant into all Android phones with the ability to make calls and send messages, even when your phone is locked, in your way. As uncovered In a code snippet not yet published by Android Authority, the update would further cement Gemini as the Google Assistant replacement.
Controlling your phone while it is locked is a distinctive feature of Gemini Live. You can already talk to AI and ask questions when your phone is locked, but currently, only Google Assistant can send messages or make calls without unlocking the device. The unpublished code suggests that Gemini will also have that option.
According to the code images, the Gemini setup will have a switch that will allow Gemini to send messages or make calls from locked devices. When activated, you can ask the AI to text or call people before unlocking the phone, although if you want to see a response with personal information, you’ll have to unlock the phone as a security measure. The appeal for users of the Gemini being able to communicate from locked devices is that it makes hands-free operation possible, which is ideal when you’re driving or otherwise busy.
New look, more Gemini
The code in development also heralds changes to Gemini’s appearance, simplifying the interface in some ways. For example, the floating text box will expand vertically so you can see all the text, and Gemini Extensions will be grouped by category to make them easier to find. There are also fewer example commands for categories, just one instead of three.
The updates found in the upcoming code aren’t earth-shattering, but they signal how Google is moving forward with its AI strategy, especially when it comes to making Android the center of Gemini features. As competition with Apple and its launch of Apple Intelligence increases, Google will at least experiment with anything that elevates Gemini’s position in mobile devices, big or small.
