Apple announced the new M4 MacBook Pro models a few weeks ago, and while the machines are pretty capable, the design is similar to last year’s and the year before that. While the design is not bad, per se, it has not been updated for a while. Apple has now started preparing for the MacBook Pro models with an OLED display, and it could come with a set of design changes as well.
Apple working on OLED MacBook Pro models for 2026 to 2027 launch
Based on a new report from TrendForce, Apple is pushing suppliers to ramp up their investments for laptop-sized larger OLED panels. This clearly indicates that the company wants the OLED display in the future MacBook Pro models. It was previously noted that OLED MacBook Pro models would not launch until the next couple of years, and the latest report suggests that the company will begin using OLED displays for MacBooks between 2025 and 2027.
LG and Samsung are Apple’s two major suppliers for manufacturing displays for its products, including the iPhone, and the same suppliers will develop OLED displays for the MacBook Pro models. The current version of the MacBook Pro features a mini-LED display, and it is a really good display compared to standard LCD panels.
It was recently uncovered that Apple also silently upgraded the display technology with the release of the new M4 MacBook Pro models. The devices now feature quantum-dot technology, which offers better color accuracy and improved motion performance. It remains to be seen if the company will use the same technology in its future OLED MacBook Pro models as well.
The OLED displays would offer superior image quality on the MacBook Pro models, better than the current mini-LED panels. We can expect the devices to feature deeper blacks, higher saturation, and better dynamic range. All of these aspects will be combined with the low power-hungry nature of the chip, allowing the MacBook Pro models to feature even better battery life than the current 24-hour mark on the base M4 MacBook Pro.
We believe that the company will take inspiration from its M4 iPad Pro models and bring the tandem OLED to the MacBook Pro models as well. This will make the OLED MacBook Pro models higher above the competition when it comes to display quality, as we have seen with the OLED iPad Pro models. Until the OLED version is announced, the MacBook Pro models will feature the same design with minor tweaks.
