The Vision Pro headset from Apple is quite capable, considering what it is designed to do, and the company is marketing the device as a spatial computer. While it is a decent product, the hefty price tag is out of the reach of the masses, which is pushing Apple to release a more affordable version. Alongside the cheaper headset, Apple is also working on its AR smart glasses, which will be similar to Meta smart glasses, but the release will not happen anytime soon.
Apple’s smart AR glasses are years away from launch as the company aims to perfect the technology behind the accessory while making it cheaper for the masses
According to Mark Gurman, Apple plans to launch its AR smart glasses in the next three to five years time, which means that users would have to wait. Users currently have the option to buy the Vision Pro, but you would have to consider the device’s bulkier form factor. Apple appears to be taking its time in the research and development of the glasses to get the “approach right,” which means that the device will not rush out to the market, similar to what other companies are doing right now.
I’m told that Apple continues to work on smart glasses with augmented reality, but that nothing is coming in the near future.
We have seen Meta’s AR glasses, which are quite promising but lack a few additions that would allow users more control over the content. On the flip side, Apple is not shy when it comes to introducing products later than its competition, and Apple Intelligence is the prime example of this approach. However, once the company introduces a product, it is finished and polished to the software. The company will potentially offer a similar user experience to users with its AR smart glasses as the Vision Pro, but there will be some key differences.
Apple’s current aim is to get the product right with an ambition to fit the product into users’ everyday lives, similar to the iPhone. Moreover, if Apple wants to offer the same experience with the AR smart glasses as the Vision Pro, it would have to make specific components in a miniature size due to the nature of the product. The product is also expected to feature a fashionable design, and with this approach, the AR smart glasses will be closer to the Apple Watch than the Vision Pro. We will share more details on the product as soon as further information is available.
