ASUS officials showcased the performance boost the ROG Ally and Ally X handhelds received with the release of AFMF 2. More benchmarks prove the same.
AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2 launched for ROG Ally handhelds, reducing frame time and increasing performance
AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2 is the upgraded version of the original AFMF that was released in early 2024. While the AFMF 2 was released in October officially with the AMD Adrenalin 24.9.1 GPU driver, it didn’t hit some devices at the initial launch. Thankfully, the AFMF 2 has now been released for the ASUS gaming handhelds, namely the ROG Ally and ROG Ally X.
AMD promised 2.5X performance with the AFMF 2 and brought several improvements, which we have reported previously. It’s good to see that the performance uplift can now be seen on both ROG Ally and Ally X consoles as well. As of now, some benchmarks have emerged, proving that the technology is doubling the performance in several titles.
One of the earliest benchmarks we have is from ASUS itself, which it showcased in a recent YouTube livestream. Apart from explaining how to install and use it on the ROG Ally handhelds, the officials also showed how much of a performance boost these consoles are receiving. Since several games (mostly older titles) do not ship with any upscaling method, such as FSR 3, the AFMF 2 comes to the rescue as it doesn’t require games to have built-in frame generation techniques.
Even though the AFMF’s performance isn’t as optimized as FSR 3’s, it still allows you to play games with buttery smoothness. As can be seen from the benchmarks, AFMF 2 is able to reduce the latency and increase the fps significantly. Similarly, we have another channel called Quick Expert Reviews demonstrating the same.
Quick Expert Reviews:
- Helldivers 2: 35-40 fps, frame time: 20-25 ms, with AFMF 2: 60-70 fps, frame time: 12-15 ms
- Fallout 76: 25-40 fps, frame time: 21-45 ms, with AFMF 2: 60-100 fps, frame time: 10-15 ms
- Cyberpunk 2077: 20-30 fps, frame time: 22-40 ms, with AFMF 2: 50+ fps, frame time: 15-25 ms
The AFMF 2 can be installed through the GPU driver update from the Update Center on both consoles. However, one should ensure that the AMD driver is running in the background. ASUS recommends that you turn off the V-Sync and apply the fullscreen or borderless fullscreen mode to leverage the power of AFMF 2. One more thing to note is that the AFMF 2 works great with games that are already achieving 45+ fps, and ASUS recommends applying graphical settings that allow you to reach this FPS mark natively.
