Apple will reportedly supercharge its AirTag 2 when it is announced next year, bringing in a wave of improvements that will augment its capabilities compared to the current-generation version. The primary change will be the inclusion of a new ultrawide-band chip that will increase the device’s item tracking range by three times, allowing users to locate their lost or misplaced belongings from a significant distance.
The ultrawide-band chip upgrade in the AirTag 2 is reportedly equivalent to the one running in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16
While the AirTag 2 will get an ultrawide-band chip upgrade, it is not like Apple will release something entirely new for it. According to Mark Gurman, who writes in his latest ‘Power On’ newsletter, the ultrawide-band chip that will be found in the tracker next year is ‘on par’ with the one used in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 series. This change will arrive with a major benefit, which is increased range. The rest of the details are given below.
“I’ve already reported a couple of times that Apple is preparing a new AirTag for next year, an upgrade that improves the onboard wireless chip and security features. Now I can share that the next AirTag will be getting a new ultrawide-band chip on par with the one introduced in the iPhone 15. That will considerably increase the range of the new AirTag, meaning it will be easier to find any items that you’ve attached it to. Right now, the AirTag can be located with Precision Finding from about 10 to 30 meters away, depending on conditions. The new model should triple that by using the next-generation ultrawide-band chip, I’m told.”
The report does not mention if the ultrawide-band chip upgrade will increase the price of the AirTag 2, but with its boosted range for item tracking, Apple will likely sell it in droves even if it charges customers a premium. For now, if you are comfortable with the current 10-meter range of the first-generation AirTag, the 4-pack is currently available for just $72.99 on Amazon, making it one of the lowest prices for this bundle. Alternatively, if you only need one of these trackers, you can get one for $24.
